28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29
In Luke chapter 12 when Jesus tells us, “Do you think that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division,” it can stop us in our tracks. After all, isn’t He the Prince of Peace? Didn’t the angels proclaim at His birth, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to those on whom His favour rests”? And yet here, Jesus speaks of fire, of division—even within the closest human relationships.
So what’s going on?
Jesus is revealing a hard truth about discipleship: following Him changes us in ways the world may not understand. When the love of Christ takes hold, it reshapes our lives, our priorities, and our relationships. This transformation isn’t always comfortable. It demands loyalty, conviction, and commitment—qualities rooted not in our own strength, but in the work of God’s Spirit within us.
Take St Paul, for instance. After encountering Jesus on the road to Damascus, his life was completely turned around. His letters echo with certainty: “I know… I am sure.” That conviction, born of God’s Spirit, gives us the courage to live faithfully even when the cost is high. Following Christ is radical, unwavering, and sometimes costly—but the reward is far greater.
The peace Jesus offers is not the world’s kind of peace. It is deeper, truer, transformative. Luke’s Gospel reminds us that Christ’s peace lifts up the lowly, fills the hungry, brings freedom to the oppressed, and brings sight to the blind. This peace challenges the world’s values and can even create division—but it also heals, redeems, and restores.
At the heart of this calling is fire—Jesus’ love, intense and unrelenting. This fire purifies, warms, and gives light. It burns away what destroys us and ignites courage, joy, and hope. And we are never alone: the Holy Spirit walks with us, keeping our focus clear and inspiring us onward.
Hebrews reminds us that we are supported by a “great cloud of witnesses”—those who have gone before us, who persevered through trials, division, and hardship. By faith, they endured, and their example encourages us to act courageously even when the path is uncertain. God’s love, like a consuming fire, strengthens us, illuminates our path, and draws us closer to Christ.
The question remains: will we let that fire burn in us? Will we allow it to guide our choices, sustain our faith, and illuminate the way for others as we run the race with our eyes fixed on Jesus?
Following Christ may not always be easy, but it is life-changing. In the fire of His love, we find courage, joy, and the true peace that the world cannot give—a peace that transforms us from the inside out.
